Australia-China Centre on Water Resources Research- Collaboration
A three phased approach
- to strengthen relationships between water managers and researchers in Australia and China through workshops, seminars, and conferences and the exchange of staff and postgraduate students;
- to establish collaborative research projects, building on those relationships, addressing an agreed set of priority research issues, and utilising joint sources of funding; and
- to develop the relationships, research projects and knowledge exchange into a major portfolio of activities delivering a vibrant and productive ongoing exchange of ideas, personnel and knowledge, and major progress on the water challenges facing both countries.
Themes
- Integrated catchment management
- Groundwater management
- Irrigation water efficiency
- Water (allocation) policy
- Models to link climate and water catchments
Current Projects
- Australia-China Special Fund – Improving water and agri-environmental sustainability in the Murray-Darling Basin and the North China Plain
Focus: To generate joint insights and research activities aimed at improving water and agri-environmental sustainability in the Murray-Darling Basin and the North China Plain. - Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research – Improving the management of water and fertiliser for agricultural profitability, water quality and reduced nitrous oxide emissions in China and Australia
Focus: To develop a spatially referenced decision support system to deliver BMPs for irrigation and fertiliser application that takes into account social and economic aspects, N2O emission and climate variability. - Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering: International Science Linkages – Linking science and policy - the sustainable use of groundwater under climate change
Focus: To link science and policy in the area of groundwater management - International Atomic Energy Agency – Managing irrigation water to enhance crop productivity under water-limiting conditions and quantifying evapo-transpiration in the unsaturated zone
Focus: To improve water efficiency using stable isotope hydrology techniques - AusAID: Public Sector Linkages Program – Establishment of a provincial level water management authority of excellence in China
Focus: To foster the development of the Shanxi Provincial Water Resources Department
